It is with an exceedingly heavy heart we announce that long serving Club Member, Fred White J P has left the crease at the age of 101 leaving his widow Vera aged 102.
What a truly magnificent long session Fred enjoyed both as a batter and a bowler; playing for Dove in the High Peak Cricket League prior to 1952 and the newly formed Derbyshire and Cheshire League thereafter.
This much respected gentleman was an enthusiastic all-rounder who featured in the League Averages with remarkable regularity, Fred retained his keen interest in and love of cricket at Dove throughout his long life; visiting his beloved Dove cricket ground only a matter of three years ago; driving over from his home in Chesterfield to watch a game at Dove’s ground.
Fred is the last of that rather special breed of Dove Cricketers from times past when the ‘Quarrymen’ eagerly awaited the team sheet going up in the Post Office window in the bottom of Dove to see who had been selected to play on Saturday!
Numerous people are the better for having come across you Fred on their journey along life’s highway experiencing your sound advice and ready wit. Rest in Peace, you served our Club impeccably both on and off the field.
The Club extends its heartfelt deepest sympathy to Vera and her family on their and its sad loss.
The members of Dove Holes Cricket Club
